Noob Designers vs. Pros?? What Makes a Talented Designer
Hey everyone! I'm back with a new blogpost, for 2021.
Do you ever wonder whether or not your designs have enough "umph" in them? Or if they are original enough? You are not alone.
I've been seeing many clothing designers call out those that have different methods of designing, specifically the more simplistic shading types: fill in the box, and copy paste. You'd be surprised to know, that you can be a talented designer regardless of style!
Click here to see my post on designing methods. I go into depth on the different styles
I decided to address that in this post, and clear up all misconceptions.
1. Everybody starts somewhere!
What were your oldest designs like? Chances are, not your favorite. It is pretty common for someone's newer designs to be better quality than their old designs.
As we move on from learning how to navigate the art software, to learning more complex methods, our designs become more advanced naturally due to experience. Nobody starts spitting out mona-lisas from the womb.
We may start out by using a simpler method, and then use complex shading later in our designing careers. Some people stick with simple shading forever (as a stylistic choice), and that is perfectly OK.
Designers, its important to stay humble and never forget where you came from. π
This is why it makes no sense to negatively evaluate a design based on style alone. It is fine to critique, but please compliment a designer on the beauty of their design. Let them know what is great, or lovely!
2. Marketing matters.
You can't rely on designing skills alone. Fashion design is a business. You can't just make the most eye-catching design ever, sit there then expect it to gain lots of sales. There are thousands of eye-catching designs.
The most sold clothing designers are fairly well known, because they know how to get themselves out there to the world. It is all in how you brand yourself, advertise, and market.
Anareloux went into detail on this. Check out the video here!
3. Community > Competition
The Roblox community of fashion lovers and designers is wonderful. We have the most creative, talented, and dedicated individuals! If you are only just a fashionista, I am talking about you too. You guys play a huge role and I respect you π Keep on making spectacular outfits!
The core purpose of the fashion community since 2008 was always to look beautiful, share beauty, and have a good time together. We all share one trait -> our love of fashion.
Like birds of a feather, community members of all skill levels and roles should stick together. Experienced designers should look out for and support the newer ones. Please be kind and inclusive to one another.
Be grateful for the amount of sales, audience, and attention you already have. If your shirt has 10,000 sales, there is no point in fretting over someone that has 1000 more.
If your only purpose as a designer is to have the most sales, or become the most popular, it is time to revaluate. The best leaders aren't selfish. They desire to bring something that benefits all to the community.
4. So, what makes a design "pro"?
It is unique, visually appealing, requires artistic application, and good craftsmanship regardless of style.
It is not necessarily who has the most amount of shading, or most amount of sales.
Thank you everyone for reading! I hope you enjoyed this post, and stay tuned for more.
